To ensure on-time and cost-effective delivery, goods can be transported using different types of transport.
Air transportation
In air transport, cargo is transported by cargo aircraft. It is an efficient means of transport, since it has the infrastructure to support it, such as airports and their air traffic control systems.
Water transportation
In international trade, sea transport in merchant ships is the most economical way to transport large volumes of cargo.
- In inland waterway transport, goods are moved on rivers, canals or lakes.
- Sea transport, on the other hand, takes place on maritime surfaces, such as seas, oceans or similar water areas.
Ground transportation
Land transportation, as one of the most commonly used methods, can be by pipeline, rail or road.
- Pipeline transport is used to transport gases, liquids, solids or multiphases, such as oil and liquid hydrocarbons, water, natural gas or chemicals.
- With rail transport, goods are transported by train and, consequently, the routes are subject to the existence of rail infrastructures.
- Road transportation is one of the most chosen methods. It is fast, versatile and suitable for short and long distances.
Multi-modal transportation
In order to make deliveries faster and more efficient from their origin to their destination, multimodal transport is the combination of different types of transport.
The choice of the appropriate means depends on the needs of the company, as each type of transport has its advantages and disadvantages.
What types of transport are there? We explain a little bit about each of them here.
